Classic Investing Texts

The Warren Buffett Way
Robert Hagstrom

This book provides an in-depth look at the investment philosophies espoused by the world's most prominent value investor -- Warren Buffett. After reading it, you'll have a better understanding of the basic principles and investing philosophies that have helped Buffett amass a $30+ billion personal fortune. You'll also get a closer look at some of the key individual stock picks he made on his way to becoming an investing legend.

One Up On Wall Street
Peter Lynch

In this timeless bestseller, former star mutual fund manager and investing legend Peter Lynch explains in clear and simple terms how small investors can beat Wall Street professionals by using information they encounter in their everyday lives. Lynch's long-term approach, in which he ignores the ups and downs of the market and instead focuses exclusively on each company's long-term fundamental prospects, is something every individual investor should practice at home. This book is an absolute must-read.

Classic Trading Books

Technical Analysis of Stock Trends
Robert D. Edwards and John Magee

Written by Edwards and Magee, this book is considered by many to be the "bible" of technical analysis. First published in 1948, the book is now in its 8th edition and has sold more than 850,000 copies! The book is the authoritative classification of chart patterns -- the same ones other writers rely on and even imitate.

Part One of the book divides chart formations into two categories -- Reversal and Consolidation. The second part of the book addresses the question of trading tactics. Clear advice is given on how to set stops, how to use trendlines and support and resistance for trading decisions, and what action to take when you spot a pattern.

If you want to recognize chart patterns and their nuances, then this is the book to read and reread. As you grow, so does it.

Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques
Steve Nison

When Steve Nison published his book on candlestick patterns in 1991, candles were virtually unknown to Western chartists. Today, less than 12 years later, candlesticks are the default form of charting in most serious technical analysis programs.

Nison loves his subject and shares it very generously with his readers. After explaining how to construct candles, he covers how candles help the trader spot reversals. As such, his teaching is vital for swing trading success.

The book discusses some of the most important candles first: hammer/hangman, bullish and bearish engulfing, dark-cloud cover and piercing. The second part of the book then shows the reader how to use candles in conjunction with Western technical analysis tools such as support and resistance, moving averages, oscillators and volume.

All together, Nison's book names and describes approximately 65 separate candle patterns. The ability to accurately name these patterns and to assess their implications can make the difference between a winning and losing trade. Of the candle literature I've studied, Nison presents these patterns and their implications most lucidly.

Secrets For Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets
Stan Weinstein

Stan Weinstein's book is remarkable for its ability to simplify technical analysis into a limited number of concepts. Using the 30-week moving average, Weinstein defines four main stages of market action: basing, advancing, toping and declining. These are called stages I-IV.

While Weinstein's system is oriented toward longer-term traders, it makes an excellent starting point in analyzing any stock in any time frame. It can also be adapted to a swing trading perspective.

Trading For A Living
Dr. Alexander Elder

Dr. Alexander Elder is a psychiatrist by training. He brings that background to the stock market where he comments extensively on the psychology of trading, money management and the importance of controlling impulsiveness.

For all the concepts that Elder discusses, he also provides specific trading rules. That makes this text a treasure trove of practical stock market wisdom and one well worth studying.

Applying Elliott Wave Theory Profitably
Steven Poser

StreetAuthority is pleased to announce the release of editor Steven Poser's new book! In Applying Elliott Wave Theory Profitably, Steven shows readers how to trade using Elliott Wave Theory -- a powerful technical analysis tool used to forecast the stock market. He does so by providing easy-to-follow trading strategies, as well as by offering clear explanations on how to interpret this method's numerous patterns. This step-by-step guide breaks down the Elliott Wave Theory and provides strategies that a trader can put into action along with a complete explanation of how and why the Elliott Wave Theory works.

How Technical Analysis Works
Bruce Kamich

Bruce Kamich, a longtime technical analyst and commodity trader, has written one of the best introductory books on technical analysis that I've seen. Unlike most others in this category, it provides practical trading advice, yet is also still educational. Bruce even goes so far as to use less-than-perfect examples of the classic technical patterns in his explanations instead of seeking out perfect examples, which almost never happen in real life anyway.

New Thinking in Technical Analysis
Rick Bensignor

A great book that has chapters from many of the top technical analysts and traders in the business. The book also includes a chapter on Elliott Wave written by Steven Poser.

Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets
John Murphy

This is the updated version of the classic, Technical Analysis of the Futures Market, by John Murphy. It is one of the most easy to read and comprehensive guides to technical analysis.

The Disciplined Trader
Mark Douglas

The Disciplined Trader by Mark Douglas is probably the single best book on trading psychology out there. Although it does not at all focus on technical analysis, it shows you how to teach yourself to listen to the market, which is what technical analysis is all about.

Extraordinary Popular Delusions & the Madness of Crowds
Charles MacKay

A true classic. This book describes the great manias of history. Written in the 1800s, it is still applicable today. Anybody that wishes to understand how and why markets move MUST read this book!

Beyond Candlesticks
Steve Nison

From the first person to bring Japanese Candlesticks to America, Steve Nison teaches you how to use Candlesticks by combining them with traditional Western technical analysis techniques. A must for any true technician's library.

Forecasting Financial Markets
Tony Plummer

This book provides an excellent combination of market psychology with technical analysis. It also has a strong focus on Mr. Plummer's variation to Elliott Wave Theory.

Thank you for giving us an opportunity to share a list of some of our favorite financial books with you.
Good investing!

Income Security of the Month
Our "Income Security of the Month" for August 2008 invests in a fast-growing overseas market that doesn't get much exposure in the mainstream financial press. And although it typically makes enormous annual dividend payments -- it has paid an average dividend of 25.5% per year over the past five years -- this fund is perhaps most appealing for its total return potential. Specifically, the fund has delivered total returns of +178.9% since 2003, and it ranks in the top 10% of its category over the past decade.

Top 10 Stocks for 2008!
Since we began publishing this report back in 2003, the picks we've featured have consistently beaten the broader market -- delivering average gains of +21.3% per year and outperforming the S&P by a nearly 2-to-1 margin.
