When I study charts, I often add a tool called Fibonacci retracements to the chart. This tool shows how much of a previous price move has been retraced. This is a daily chart of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSE: SPY). In this case, prices fell almost 12%. The subsequent gain of about 8% retraced more than 60% of the loss. Retracements are important to technical analysts and are widely followed by traders at some of the biggest hedge funds.
